Headshots

There are many factors to making a good headshot, these include:

Background-the background should be appropriate to the person having the headshot taken, it shouldn’t distract from the picture and should allow for the person to be clearly seen in the photo.

Lighting-the photo should be well lit so the person is visible but should not be too bright as too reflect and detract from the image.

Angles- the angle should be fitting for the purpose of the headshot and clearly show the persons face, the headshot should also be from the shoulders up.

Editing- the image should not be heavily edited and should be fit to purpose with minimal editing

Cropping-the image should be taken specifically as a headshot and should not be cropped from another distance of photo.

Positioning- the photo should be positioned in a way that the person being photographed is most comfortable with as well as following the standards for a headshot, with it being from the shoulders up, along with the persons being clearly in frame.

Clothing and jewellery- the persons clothing and jewellery should be simple and not distract from the persons face.

Facial expression- the expression should be relaxed and positive, with a focus on the eyes.

Context-the headshot should be fit for purpose and should portray the person to fit the intention of the headshot through the different use of angles and lighting.

Examples

This headshot is good as the lighting is bright but not too harsh and the persons face is clear and the focus on this shot. The positioning and expression seem relaxed and natural as well as the clothing being simple and professional. Having the white background is simple and allows the person to be the focus. This image is clearly taken and fit for the purpose of a headshot.

This headshot is also a good example as the person can be seen clearly with a relaxed and positive expression, the lighting and background aren’t too harsh or jarring as to detract from the focus as well as the clothing and jewellery being simple and professional. The person is in focus and the image doesn’t look overly edited. The photo looks comfortable, professional and suited to purpose as it doesn’t look awkwardly cropped and is from the shoulders upwards.

This image is also a good example, the person is once again the central focus, with a blurred background that allows them to stand out. The clothing is simple and professional with no bright, distracting colours and the expression is relaxed and natural. The photo angles show the whole face without creating any unusual shadows and the lighting allows the photo to be clear without appearing too harsh.
